CUSTOM METAL LABELS

The plating finish is one of the most important decisions when developing a custom metal label. It affects not only the color of the product, but also how the logo reflects light, how it coordinates with fabric or leather, and how customers perceive the finished brand.
A bright gold label can create a polished and decorative appearance, while matte gunmetal may feel more understated and modern. Antique finishes bring out recessed details, and brushed surfaces can reduce mirror-like reflections while adding visible texture.
At Ninco, we manufacture custom metal sewing labels in zinc alloy with a wide range of plating colors and surface treatments. This guide explains the main options and the practical points to consider before approving a sample.
Why the Plating Finish Matters
Two metal labels made from the same mould can look very different after plating and surface finishing. The final result depends on several elements:
Plating color
Shiny, matte, brushed or antique surface treatment
Polishing level before plating
Raised and recessed logo details
Surrounding fabric, leather or packaging color
Lighting conditions in which the product is viewed
For this reason, the finish should be selected together with the product design and application—not as a separate decision at the end of development.
1. Gold Plating Finishes
Gold is one of the most frequently requested colors for custom metal labels used on garments, handbags, footwear and premium packaging. However, “gold” is not a single fixed shade.
Depending on the project, the finish may appear warmer, lighter, greener, redder or more antique. Common options include imitation gold, light gold, yellow light gold, tea gold, green light gold and red tea gold. Electrophoretic gold may also be selected when a particular coated appearance is required.
Bright Gold
A shiny gold finish reflects more light and makes raised logos and curved surfaces stand out. It works well for fashion labels, handbag logo plates, decorative accessories and packaging hardware where a polished appearance is desired.
Light Gold and Pale Gold
Light gold is softer and less yellow than conventional bright gold. It is often easier to coordinate with beige, cream, white, pastel fabrics and light-colored leather.
Tea Gold and Green-Toned Gold
Tea gold generally has a deeper, more restrained tone. Green light gold contains a subtle green or champagne influence. These finishes can work well for vintage-inspired bags, leather goods and collections that require a less conventional gold color.
Matte Gold
Matte gold diffuses reflections and creates a softer surface. It is suitable when the customer wants the warmth of gold without a strong mirror effect. On small labels, it can also make the overall product feel quieter and less decorative.
2. Silver, Nickel and Chrome Finishes
Silver-colored finishes are versatile and can match many fabric, leather and packaging colors. They are commonly used for sportswear, denim, footwear, luggage, uniforms and contemporary fashion accessories.
Bright Silver
Bright silver has a clean, reflective appearance. It highlights polished curves and raised logo details, making it a useful option for modern branding and decorative metal labels.
Matte Silver or Matte Nickel
Matte silver reduces glare and produces a softer metallic surface. It is often chosen for understated apparel labels, technical products and accessories where a bright mirror finish would be too strong.
Chrome
Chrome can create a crisp and highly reflective appearance. The exact result still depends on polishing quality, product shape and the coating system used after plating.
Nickel-Free Options
If a project requires a nickel-free finish, this should be confirmed before sampling. The required standard, intended market and product-contact conditions should be provided to the manufacturer so the appropriate plating specification can be discussed.
3. Gunmetal and Black-Toned Finishes
Gunmetal is a popular choice for black, gray, navy and other dark-colored products. Compared with bright silver, it gives the label a deeper and more restrained appearance.
Shiny gunmetal reflects the surrounding environment and can appear lighter or darker depending on the angle. Matte gunmetal is more stable visually and creates a subdued surface. Brushed gunmetal adds directional texture and is often suitable for modern bags, menswear, footwear and luggage hardware.
When choosing gunmetal, it is important to compare the sample directly with the main product material. A gunmetal finish may look different beside black leather than it does beside gray fabric.
4. Rose Gold
Rose gold combines a metallic finish with a warm pink or copper tone. It is frequently used for fashion accessories, handbags, cosmetic packaging, gift packaging and decorative garment labels.
Because the perceived color can change under warm and cool lighting, a physical sample is recommended before bulk production—especially when the metal label must match other rose-gold hardware.
5. Antique Finishes
Antique finishes are designed to emphasize depth and detail. Darker color remains in recessed areas while raised surfaces appear lighter after finishing. This contrast can make lettering, borders and decorative patterns easier to see.
Common options include antique gold, antique silver and antique copper. They are suitable for vintage clothing, leather goods, denim, heritage-style packaging, badges and detailed logo plates.
Antique finishing is not completely uniform in the same way as a flat painted color. Small variations in shading are part of the intended visual effect, so the acceptable appearance should be confirmed during sampling.
6. Shiny, Matte or Brushed: Which Surface Should You Choose?
The plating color and the surface effect should be considered separately. The same gold or gunmetal tone can be produced with very different visual results.
Shiny Finish
A shiny finish produces strong reflections and clear highlights. It is a good choice when the goal is a polished, decorative and eye-catching metal label.
It also makes surface preparation important, because scratches or uneven polishing may be more visible.
Matte Finish
A matte finish softens reflections and gives the label a more restrained appearance. It can work well for minimalist branding, menswear, outdoor products and applications where the metal should not dominate the design.
Brushed Finish
A brushed finish introduces fine directional lines into the surface. It creates texture without relying on strong color contrast and can make a simple logo plate look more technical or industrial.
The brushing direction should be confirmed before production, especially for rectangular labels where horizontal and vertical brushing can create noticeably different results.
How to Select the Best Finish for Your Product
Before choosing a plating finish, consider the following questions.
What Material Will the Label Be Attached To?
Bright finishes create strong contrast on matte leather or fabric. Matte and antique finishes often blend more naturally with textured or vintage materials.
Should the Label Match Other Hardware?
If the product also uses zippers, buckles, buttons, chains or rivets, send a physical reference sample whenever possible. Descriptions such as “light gold” may vary between suppliers.
How Detailed Is the Logo?
Shiny plating emphasizes curved raised areas, while antique finishing helps reveal recessed lettering and patterns. Very fine details should be reviewed during artwork and mould development.
Where Will the Finished Product Be Sold and Used?
Tell the manufacturer about the intended market, product category and any compliance requirements. If nickel-free plating, special coating or additional testing is required, it should be specified before quotation and sampling.
What Is the Desired Brand Style?
Bright gold or rose gold: decorative and fashion-focused
Light gold or matte gold: soft and refined
Bright silver or chrome: clean and modern
Matte silver or gunmetal: understated and contemporary
Brushed metal: technical and textured
Antique gold, silver or copper: vintage and detailed
Why a Physical Plating Sample Is Important
Plating colors shown on a phone or computer screen are only a visual reference. Screen brightness, camera settings, reflections, ambient light and display calibration can all change the apparent color.
For projects where color matching is important, we recommend confirming a physical plating sample or an approved production sample before bulk manufacturing. If the metal label must match existing hardware, sending the original hardware sample gives the manufacturer a more reliable reference than a photo alone.
During Ninco’s customization process, we can review the logo, dimensions, attachment method, plating color and surface effect before moving into bulk production.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Same Plating Color Be Made in Both Shiny and Matte Finishes?
Many plating colors can be combined with shiny or matte surface treatments, but availability depends on the product structure and finishing process. Confirm the required combination before sampling.
Can a Metal Label Match the Color of My Zipper or Buckle?
A close match may be possible, but the best method is to provide a physical reference sample. Different base materials, shapes and polishing levels can cause the same plating process to appear slightly different.
Are the Colors in the Online Chart Exact?
No online chart can guarantee an exact color match. The images are intended to help compare finish families. Final approval should be based on a physical sample whenever precise matching is required.
Which Finish Is Easiest to Maintain?
The result depends on the plating system, protective coating, product use and exposure conditions. Tell us how the label will be used so we can discuss a suitable finish and coating option.
